Marco Balboni is Full Professor of International Law within the Department of Political and Social Sciences and Director of First Cycle Degree of International relations and diplomatic affairs and member of the International Research Centre on European Law (C.I.R.D.E.) of the University of Bologna. He is member, inter alia, of the Institut des droits de l’homme (IIDH - Strasbourg) and the European Business Administration Test (EUROBAT). He is also member of the scientific committee of the Europe Direct - Punto Europa, of the European network “Europe Direct” (University of Bologna and Municipality of Forlì). He has been serving as legal expert for the EU-FRA in many occasions and he has carried out multiple research activities on behalf of the European Commission. He has organized many winter, spring and summer schools on human rights, especially with the IIDH and the Moscow Higher School of Economics.

Marco Balboni’s main research interests are the following: the role of the domestic courts in the implementation of EU Law, the contribution of the EU in promoting the principles of the rule of law in the international arena, immigration law, and non-discrimination (with an emphasis on gender and LGBT issues). Over last years, he has been coordinating many initiatives concerning the protection and promotion of human rights at European and international level; he has also published widely on this subject matter.

In particular, Marco Balboni is currently addressing some of the issues concerning international and EU disaster law in the framework of the EU project “Shaping Fair Cities”, which aims at raising awareness on and fostering the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. Moreover, he is currently directing a research program about human rights in a region which has been deeply affected by natural and man-made disasters, namely Western Sahara.
