The fundamental mission of the Department of Law of the University of Turin is the development, enhancement, transfer and dissemination of knowledge in the field of legal studies. The Department aims at creating opportunities for social, cultural and economic development of the territory, while maintaining a fruitful dialogue with other academic institutions at national and international level.

The Department of Law is also dedicated to the training of legal experts, with the intention to make them capable of operating in a national and international context. The Department of Law has developed study programs focused on contemporary educational needs of students and devoted to facilitate and promote their entrance in the labor market. In 2018, the Department of Law has been included among the Departments of Excellence 2018-2022 by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR) .

 

Role in CBRN-ITALY

The research unit of the University of Turin - Department of Law will contribute to the mapping of relevant international legal obligations, assessing the legality of CBRN weapons’ use under IHL and under the Arms Control and Disarmament Law (ACDL). In particular, the research team will assess to what extent ACDL is up to the task of preventing the use of CBW and at ensuring their destruction. It will also consider in details the impact of obligations related to nuclear disarmament and nuclear testing, in view of current developments in the international practice related to nuclear weapons. The Turin unit will then explore the operative frameworks for the acute response phase, also performing interviews with incident commanders, first responders, law enforcement officials. The main outcome of the research activity of University of Turin unit will be the drafting of recommendations and guidelines related to CBRN response
